In what is being dubbed as the biggest jewelery theft in the world in the last 10 years, diamonds and jewels worth an astonishing 53 million dollars was burgled from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes on Sunday.

Police suspect the notorious Pink Panther gang behind the multi-million  heist.

The hotel, located in the French Riviera, was exhibiting temporary jewelery by the prestigious Leviev diamond house.

The burglary took place around noon, a police official said. However, it didn't confirm the local media report that stated an armed man breaking into the exhibition room, cramming his suitcase with the gems before making a hasty exit.

“It’s a huge theft. Anytime you talk about a heist with many millions of dollars it turns heads and feeds the imagination,” said Jonathan Sazonoff, US editor for the Museum Security Network website and an authority on high-value crime.

A troop of police officers were deployed  in front of the Carlton exhibition room near a Cartier diamond boutique to thwart journalists and photographers from “clicking” scene of the crime.

Just last week, on Thursday, a member of the notorious jewel thief gang Pink Panther gang, Milan Poparic broke out of the Swiss prison after abettors slammed down the prison gates and trounced the guards with their AK-47s, revealed an official.

As per the Interpol, Pink Panther has burgled luxury watch and jewelery stores in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, worth over USD 330 million, since 1999.
