Facebook COO To Deliver Virginia Tech Graduation Speech

The Virginia Tech's 2017 spring commencement speaker will be Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the university announced on  Thursday.

Sandberg, who oversees all of the Facebook's business operations, has been with the company since 2008 and previously worked for the Google and was chief of staff for the United States Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers.

She is also the founder of Leanin.org, named for her in the year 2013 bestseller book "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead," which examines why women's progress in the workplace has stalled and also offers solutions for the problem.

Her speech will be at the Lane Stadium on May 12, with the commencement ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Sandberg will be introduced by Tech alumna Regina Dugan, who is the vice president of engineering for Facebook. Before working at the Facebook, Dugan was the head of Google's "moonshot" team, which attempted to develop a new technology.

Tech President Timothy Sands said in a written statement that, our graduating students will have an unbelievable opportunity to hear from two of the most influential and inspiring women leaders in the American industry today. Sheryl Sandberg’s many professional accomplishments in both the private and public sectors are remarkable and inspirational in their own right. In addition to that, she had to face the devastating and sudden loss of her husband. Her open and honest public dialog on the loss and resilience will surely inspire our graduates as they prepare for the next step in their life’s journey.

Tech estimates that about 5,000 students will graduate during the ceremony.
