Ex-Police Officer Sentenced To 3 Months Jail

An ex-police officer, of Richmond, David Cobb has been sentenced to three months in the jail for shootings in the year 2015, which caused the death of 18-year-old Paterson Brown Jr.

This comes after the ex-police officer was convicted of the voluntary manslaughter in the month of February.

Judge David Johnson called the case as a "tragedy across the board" and he imposed the jury's recommended sentence of three months and also a fine of $1,000.

Cobb was also ordered to pay $2,000 to the Virginia Victim’s Association Fund for the Brown’s funeral expenses.

At the time of shooting, the nine-year veteran was off the duty. Cobb resigned from the Richmond Police Department after he was convicted.

“His life changed forever that day, regardless of what the court did. Every day of his life whether he was convicted or acquitted, my client will wonder why didn't that kid put his hands up," said Cobb’s attorney David Baugh, about the Wednesday’s sentencing.

Cobb has shot and killed Brown at a car wash by the Sunoco gas station of Midlothian Turnpike in the Chesterfield on 17th October, 2015. Cobb had driven his girlfriend's car in order to get it washed that day.

Police said that Brown entered the Cobb's car, and that is when a confrontation ensued.

The ex-police officer admitted of shooting the teenager, but only because he thought that Brown had a weapon and also was a threat to himself and others. But, later found that Brown was unarmed.

The first trial of Cobb ended in a mistrial as the jury could not return the unanimous verdict on the charge of second-degree murder.

On Wednesday, Baugh argued for the suspended sentence, but the Judge would not acquiesce.

A move which was a surprise for some of the Cobb’s supporters.

Sheryl Nici-O'Donnell, Richmond United For Law Enforcement said that the nine year veteran of the Richmond police department has a huge impact in his church, community and also on the many young people he mentored.

She also said the jail time for David Cobb is a travesty of justice. Brown's family has left the courthouse after the Wednesday's sentencing with no comment.
