Young Man Caught Posing as Senior Citizen to Fly to Abroad

A seemingly feeble and aged passenger on September 8 reached security at Delhi’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. He had a snow-white beard, the oversized glasses, and was on a wheelchair.

He caught the attention of staff at India’s busiest airport at around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday when he was hoping to get on an overnight flight to New York.

"He posed as if he was very old and incapacitated," Shrikant Kishore, a senior official with the Central Industrial Security Force, told CNN.

Dressed in a white tunic and pants, with a white turban and black slippers, the passenger was unwilling to be frisked. "Our screener asked the person in the wheelchair to stand. He said that he cannot stand. Our screener asked if he would stand with support. He reluctantly stood up,” Kishore said.

At that time the officer noticed that passenger's beard and hair were white, but the roots were black. He was constantly trying to avoid the officer's eyes.

When asked for a passport, the passenger submitted documentation which claimed that he was Amrick Singh, born in February 1938 in Delhi.

"He was definitely not 80 years old. His skin was of a younger person," Kishore told CNN.

Upon further interrogation, the man told security staff that he was actually 32-year-old, bearing a name Jayesh Patel and a resident of Gujarat state.

The security at the airport after detailing him handed over Patel to immigration authorities for holding a fake passport.

According to a report by CCN, Kishore said he doesn't know what the current status of the case is or the reason behind the impersonation.

With close to 70 million passengers traveling through the Indira Gandhi International Airport, it is named the 12th busiest airport in the world.
