The skies lit up with rockets and sparklers as the Americans unleashed fancy fireworks to commemorate their Independence Day.

Millions of spectators gathered across the country to witness the annual fireworks show.

Four scows  ferrying 40,000 shells, on the Hudson River on Thursday night, released a volley of brilliant reds, whites and blues, illuminating the skies and leaving the audience enthralled.

The Statue of Liberty that was battered and broken by Superstorm Sandy, was reopened to the public after eight months.

Boston held its first large gathering after the marathon bombing that killed three and left thousands injured.

While cities of New Orleans, Philadelphia, Washington and Pennsylvania held large events to mark the day, the celebrations were kept low-key at the blaze-torn Arizona.

Elsewhere in the country, throngs of revelers gathered to party and celebrate the day with booze, barbecue, music and patriotic parades.
