The House of Delegates unanimously passed a bill allowing the hunters to wear blaze pink instead of blaze orange hunting apparel. For the safety reasons, Virginia requires the hunters to wear blaze orange during deer hunting season, so they will stand out and not get shot by another hunter accidentally.
Del. James Edmunds, R-South Boston said that, “Blaze pink is proven to be more visible then blaze orange.” He sponsored HB 1939, which will go to the Senate for consideration.
Many female hunters and stores that cater to them already have been considering the pink as a camo option. It is all part of an effort to give women a choice of colors to wear out in the field. Retailers have begun the marketing of pink hoodies, hats, vests, T-shirts and many other clothing for hunters.
Edmund’s legislation expands the color palette and states that:
Every hunter and every person accompanying the hunter shall (i) wear a blaze orange or blaze pink hat … or a blaze orange or blaze pink upper body clothing, that is visible from 360 degrees or (ii) display at least 100 square inches of the solid blaze orange or blaze pink material at shoulder level within body reach visible from 360 degrees.
Judge Issues Nationwide Block To Travel Ban
Virginia is not the only state which is offering blaze pink as a substitute for blaze orange for hunters. Wisconsin was the first state, and since then, New York, Colorado and Louisiana have followed the suit.
Some believe that the color option will draw more women to hunting. About 13,000 women are currently registered to hunt in Virginia.
It will be a good thing for women to wear the colors of camo they want and not be stuck with the male pattern, said Richard Hill, who works at the Bob Moates Sports Shop in the Chesterfield.
