Virginia Senators Seek Information over Virginia Facility Abuse Claims

Virginia's Democratic senators on Friday asked the Trump administration for response over operations at a Viginia's juvenile battered and detached in solitary detention.

Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine conveyed to the head of the United States Office of Refugee Resettlement questions regarding the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center.

The Associated Press reported on Thursday that six Latino teens had made bound statements detailing intense ill-treatment they said they endured between 2015 and 2018, under both the Obama and Trump administrations. In court filings, attorneys for the detention facility have contradicted all allegations of physical abuse.

The senators asked whether functionaries had received any complaints in the past regarding the facility located near Staunton, Virginia. The Democrats likewise want to know whether there is a plan of action in place to regulate personnel members who ill-treat children in federal custody.

Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services, which includes the Refugee Resettlement office, have refused to render any statement this week about when they first learned of the abuse allegations and whether any action has been taken to find out the truthfulness of those assertions.

The young immigrants held at the Shenandoah facility, as part of a federal class-action lawsuit, said in sworn statements that they were beaten, handcuffed and locked up for prolonged periods in solitary confinement, left unclothed and shivering in concrete cells.

Children as young as 14 too said the guards stripped-down their clothes and strapped them to chairs with bags placed over their heads.
