Apple will present the iOS 27 update for compatible iPhone models at its yearly Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) on June 8. However, information about this upcoming version of the operating system has already appeared online. Recently, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman disclosed that Apple plans to release a new special app for Siri that will provide enhanced features. This app will also work with other apps like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT. Gurman has now provided more insights regarding how these extensions will function and Apple's intention to feature them through the App Store. In the newest issue of his weekly newsletter called Power On, Gurman explains that the dedicated Siri app will function on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. At present, users can activate Siri by speaking commands, through shortcuts, or by pressing the side button. Users cannot revisit past conversations, meaning they cannot check previous interactions with the virtual assistant. However, this is expected to change in iOS 27, as users will likely be able to open Siri as an app and review their earlier chats.

The journalist, known for reliable Apple-related leaks, mentions that the new Siri assistant will be capable of understanding spoken and written commands. Currently, Siri on iPhone operates using Apple's Foundation Models, while users can also obtain extra information using ChatGPT, regardless of having an OpenAI account. Gurman has previously stated that Apple will allow third-party 'extensions' for AI applications installed on a user’s device. Applications that support these extensions will be able to connect with Siri, and users will have access to information from third-party apps such as Gemini or Claude that are on their device.

To help users find apps that support these extensions, the journalist indicates that Apple will display them in a special area of the App Store dedicated to showcasing third-party AI integrations for applications. The company earns a 30 percent commission on qualifying in-app purchases, giving Apple another revenue stream, even while it expands its own AI assistant capabilities.

We anticipate gaining further insights regarding these updates, which are set to arrive with iOS 27, within the next few months as WWDC 2026 approaches. At that time, Apple is likely to reveal its upcoming operating system updates, including iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Apple's updated Siri features are already two years past their expected timeline, so we are eager to see what the company will present at this year's developer conference.
